It is a matter of great interest to know that written history has a record of using pearls since a very long time in the form of different ornaments. Earrings, bracelets, waist chains, wrist chains are a few among the endless list. The necklace decorated with pearls is the most loved ornament of all. There are so many types of pearls differing in their origin, color, size and shape. Pearl necklace mesmerizes the onlookers gracefully. Pearls that adorn different ornaments come in different shapes. However, there are eight basic shapes of pearls. These are round, semi-round, and button, and drop, pear, oval, baroque and circled.

Perfectly round pearls are the most valuable and are rarely available. Round shaped pearls are the preferred pearls in necklace. Semi rounds are also of prime importance in the making of a pearl necklace. Button pearls which have flattened round shape can also be used to lace the necklace. These are usually used in single pendants and earrings. Drop and pear shaped pearls are used as a center pearl in a necklace. Baroque shaped pearls are quite irregular and have different shape and looks. These are also seen in necklaces.

The terminology to describe the length of necklaces is completely different. A collar necklace rounds the collarbone with style which, is made up of several strands of pearls. A collar necklace is not a usual hanging type. It doesn’t hang at all. Pearl chokers are another type which rounds the neck base line. A strand called a princess length comes down just below the collarbone. A matinee length embraces just above the breasts. An opera length is long enough to reach the breast bone of the wearer. A pearl length falls down farther than opera. Pearl necklace of any type can make a stunning difference in the makeup of a woman.

When it comes to the origin of the pearls that are laced in a necklace, there are freshwater pearls, seawater pearls, cultured pearls and imitating pearls. Each one has its own value. The freshwater pearls come only next to seawater pearls which are considered natural and the best variety. Cultured pearls are superior in quality when compared to imitating pearls. The quality of the pearls can be tested by gemologists. The price of the pearls depends upon the quality of the pearls. Pearl necklace of the best quality always tops the priority of aristocratic ladies.

Earrings and necklaces can also be qualified on the grade of the color of the pearl. White, and black, marine water pearls are by far the most sought after, other color hues can be found on pearls from the oceans. Pink, blue, champagne, green, black and even purple saltwater pearls can be of great interest, but to collect enough of these rare colors to form uniform pearl necklace is a herculean task.

The value of pearl is judged on the basis of certain important qualities. Luster, color, size and symmetry in the shape are the parameters that are usually considered while judging the quality and value of the pearls. The most valuable pearls are large, round shaped ones with luster. They are the most precious pearls people love to have in their beautiful pearl necklace. The grandeur and the pelf a necklace with colorful pearls is simply signature of the aristocracy.
